Graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the Department of Physics, Fudan University.
Subsequently selected for the "CUSPEA" (Li Zhengdao) program to study in the United States, where he earned a Ph.D. in Physics from Purdue University.

Joined the Department of Physics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 1992.
